Vision 2088 – The Legacy of The Craft & A Cyberpunk Outlook

Vision 2088 is both a festive party and an immersive artistic piece. Sticky Rice finds inspiration in the Cyberpunk genre for, this, their most ambitious party event yet, Vision 2088: A Cyberpunk Outlook.

“Cyberpunk” is a subgenre of science fiction in a dystopian futuristic setting that tends to focus on a “combination of lowlife and high tech,” featuring futuristic technological and scientific achievements, such as artificial intelligence and cybernetics, juxtaposed with societal collapse. Description

Vision 2088 is divided into two parts: The Legacy Of The Craft, an intergenerational creatives’ panel discussion followed by Vision 2088: A Cyberpunk Outlook, a futuristic party. This two-part project aims to create a space in time where individuals from historically marginalized and erased communities gather to actively remember the past and to imagine a brighter future. The space is meant to be a place where their experiences collide to make room for dialogue, healing, and creativity.

The Legacy Of The Craft | 4pm to 6pm | Free

In a convivial discussion, our multi-generational panel will explore how empathy influences the themes of their work as Asian diasporic artists, as well as how their creative work is influenced by those who have led the way before them.

The four featured panelists are George Fok, Albert Nguyen, Allan Matudio, and Celine Do (emerging artist).

A Cyberpunk Outlook | 9pm to 3am | 25.65$

Vision 2088 is both a festive party and an immersive artistic piece. Sticky Rice finds inspiration in the Cyberpunk genre for their most ambitious party event yet, Vision 2088: A Cyberpunk Outlook.

It is often depicted as a harsh, technologically advanced future.”

The origins of cyberpunk are often rooted in Western anxieties about the East. By reclaiming the cyberpunk narrative for Asian and queer communities, this community can reclaim agency in challenging negative stereotypes and contribute to writing a more optimistic, inclusive, and loving future.

The Ausgang Plaza will be transformed into a futuristic universe reminiscent of the cyberpunk genre. The event’s visual aesthetic will be created with the assistance of lighting and AI artists, along with motion and graphic designers. DJs, and other performance artists will also be providing entertainment throughout the evening.

Biographies

Online Threat

Online Threat spins high octane energy injections that are experimental, playful and humorous – fully embracing and reflecting the overstimulated nature that defines our times. Hard trance, acoustic trap-edits, baile, lento – anything goes if it fits as he oscillates between genres and cultural outputs.

George Fok

George Fok (born in Hong Kong) is a new media artist whose practice primarily involves installation, digital art, and filmmaking. Based in Montreal, his oeuvre explores the mixed medium of immersive experience and other digital-born mediums. Investigate memory, speculative narratives, reconstructed histories, and aesthetics.

Beginning his journey as a graphic designer in the visual communications industry, George co-founded a multidisciplinary creative agency and other collectives over the last three decades. He also worked in features and documentary films and was the creative director in a bleeding-edge cultural institution in Montreal.  There he earned knowledge and recognition in the milieu of contemporary art through content creation, communication campaigns, and other commissioned works, which led to his endeavour as an artist in new media art and immersive experience.

George’s work has been exhibited in museums, immersive shows, and Hollywood films. He has created biographical concert installations for ionic artists like Leonard Cohen and Yoko Ono. His work has been exhibited in Canadian and global art institutions such as Musée d’art Contemporain de Montréal, Art Gallery of Ontario, GL Strand & Nikolaj Kunsthal in Copenhagen, The Jewish Museum of New York, and The Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco.

In combining his research and passion for diversity and inclusion in the creative fields, George frequently collaborates with emerging talents from other practices, such as choreographers, fashion designers, and performers. As a people-loving person, he often volunteers and organizes community outreaches, youth mentorship projects, and other accelerator initiatives.

Céline Do

Céline is a 27 year-old Canadian Vietnamese self-taught painter turned filmmaker based in Montreal.

At the age of 22, she decided to take a “sabbatical” from her studies at the John Molson School of Business (unbeknownst to her parents) to pursue her passion for the arts and document the entire journey.  “Crazy Broke Asian” is the resulting (in the making) docuseries of that endeavor and her debut work.

Albert Nguyen

Albert Nguyen is a Montreal based art director and designer. With over 15 years experience, he specializes in design art direction, merchandise design and branding. Born and raised in Montreal, he completed his studies at Concordia University.

Since 2017 Albert has had his own studio practice, working with clients such as adidas, Aldo, Frank and Oak, Nike, SSENSE, among many others. Albert’s unorthodox design style and out of the box ideas have allowed him to work with some of the biggest brands in Canada and North America. In most recent times, Albert was hired as the Senior Art Director for Hudson’s Bay Company, leading their teams during a rebranding and brand repositioning.

Prior to starting his freelance practice Albert was art director at Little Burgundy shoes, where he was in charge of their retail in-store design, ecommerce and bi-annual print magazine.

In addition to his commercial work, Albert has committed a large part of his design practice to giving back to his community and actively works on design projects with a socially conscious mission. Most recently he has designed merchandise for charities and organizations committed to supporting and amplifying BIPOC artists, and campaigns to support anti-racism efforts in Montreal and Quebec.
