Festival Accès Asie is pleased to present the multidisciplinary performance creation Indivisible, a production by Le Groupe Herencias. This performance combines the surrealist-automatic and responsive visual imagery and collaborative poetry of Nadia Chaney; the digital, experimental musical compositions of Rupinder Singh Sidhu; and the unique intercultural choreographic fusions of Julio Hong, all capably tied together by producer and artist doula, Farah Fancy.
After trauma, conflict, separation, or grave loss, we can find ourselves feeling split and torn. Indivisible is a testament that these splits need not break us and can bring out surprising inner resources. A space can open and be filled by the wise contortions of dreams.
Opposites can never be divided. They are part of a spectrum, part of the necessary continuity of the world. They are meaningless without each other: they are indivisible. Indivisible belongs to the moment of insight, and to the fleeting and ephemeral flickering of dreams. The audience is invited to influence the performance with voice and interpretation. The audience becomes the waking dreamer, the one who catches the dew of meanings and the gist of the messages.
Nadia was born in Saskatoon, grew up in Ottawa, matured in Vancouver, and is currently living in Montreal. As a first generation Indian settler in Canada, she recognizes that all of these places are the traditional territories of Indigenous nations. Nadia is a multi-disciplinary artist who has been professionally active since 2002 in spoken word, poetry, music, creative non-fiction, visual arts, performance art, and performance installation. At the core of her artistic practice are community art and the deep belief that creativity is a birthright not only for humans but for every aspect of the world around us. As Director of Training at Partners for Youth Empowerment she has been able to help support thousands of youth and adults to develop their relationship with their creativity. She holds a Master’s degree in Imaginative Education and is a PhD candidate in Expressive Art Therapy at the European Graduate School. (www.nadiachaney.com)
Farah Fancy – Artist doula, Dramaturge and Producer
Farah is an arts manager, artist, producer, community worker, and consultant who, for over 25 years, has been using the arts as a mechanism to teach about equality, rights, personal histories, self-actualization, and community bridging. She is rooted in working with cross cultural populations to promote professional quality arts to a diversity of communities across class, ethnicity, ability, gender, etc., and outreach to new audiences. Her main interest is to find ways for invisible voices to become visible through the arts. Farah co-founded Le Groupe Herencias, whose mandate is to inspire using the arts for the promotion, exchange, and acceptance of identity, culture and heritage. She has created over 15 theatre forum pieces, produced over 10 artist productions, collaborated on over 30 shows, has designed countless arts programs, and facilitated workshops for more than 10,000 participants. Julio Hong was born in Havana in 1975, where he absorbed the rich dance traditions of Cuba earning a Diploma in Classical Ballet from the National School of Arts (ENA) and, in 1994, a Masters degree in Dramaturgy and Theatre from the Superior Institution of Art (ISA). In 1999, Julio joined Marie Chouinard, where he danced for six years, followed by a year with Rubberbandance Group, four years with the popular television show Le Match des Étoiles, and performed in Joe Dassin, Sherazade, Motown, and regularly with Cirque du Soleil. Julio then founded the Afro Cuban Association of Montreal and co-founded Le Groupe Herencias. Now as a choreographer, his expertise in traditional, ballet, and contemporary dance plus movements from daily life create a unique contemporary choreographic style not seen anywhere else in Canada. Rupinder Singh Sidhu – Composer
Rup Sidhu is an interdisciplinary artist, musician, producer, and composer. Specializing in vocal percussion and live looping, his sound blends the rhythms of poetry and spoken word with a dynamic range of cultural hybridity. Inspired by folk and classical forms of music from around the world, his musical expressions can range from groove oriented hip hop beats to contemporary fusions of classical ragas, scores for the National Film Board of Canada and remixes of vintage bollywood tunes, to experimental compositions for dance and theatre productions.

Presented in collaboration with the Groupe Le Vivier, under the 90th anniversary of Japan-Canada diplomatic relations, the Festival Accès Asie is pleased to present an evening of New Music titled Eau douce - Eau trouble. Three exceptional emerging artists, pianist Kimihiro Yasaka (piano), Louis-Philippe Bonin (saxophone) and David Therrien-Bongo (percussion) unite to present the different states and mutations of water through musical pieces that put forth the colors and tones of Asia.
Three recurring themes in the country’s cultural imaginary landscape, highlighted by a strong impressionist connotation associated with their titles: the mythical aspect of nature, temporality and the notion of movement. This concert evokes both musical aesthetics and tones of instruments of traditional Japanese music as well as contemporary works. Eau douce - Eau trouble is an experience where Japan is put to more violent manifestations of the storm’s torrents. The evening’s objective is to pay a tribute to music inspired by Asian folklore with a program that includes repertoire as well as ordered works specially written for the occasion by the composer Keiko Devaux.

Japan native Kimihiro Yasaka discovers piano at the age of 12 with Reiko Mizutani. Student of Professor Kyoko Hashimoto at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, he completed in 2011 a Master in performance in Piano Solo. Recipient of numerous prizes across Canada, Japan and Italy, Kimihiro performs in various events and festivals across Canada, Japan, the USA and Europe (Toronto Summer Music Festival, ISME World Conference and Festival, MusiMarsFestival, Chosen Vale Festival). Louis-Philippe Bonin – Saxophonist
Holder of a master’s (M.MUS) in performance at the University of Montreal, he develops his passion for his instrument through extensive courses with Timothy McAllister at the University of Michigan. Frequently invited as a soloist, he has performed with organisations such as the Moldova Philarmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre à vent non identifié and the Société de musique contemporaine (SMCQ). He is regularly invited as a jury member and master classes for various organisations such as the Fédération des harmonies et orchestres symphoniques du Québec (FHOSQ), MusicFest Quebec, etc. Active as a saxophone professor at the CEGEP Saint-Laurent, he is also artistic director of the Ensemble SaxoLogie and clinician artist for YAHAMA Saxophones and Anches LÉGÈRE. Standing out as one of the most active and polyvalent percussionist of his generation, David Therrien-Brongo is notably renowned for his virtuosity and his rigorous accomplished work in chamber music. He is a recipient of the Guy Soucie prize and the prestigious Concours Prix d’Europe in 2017. He plays regularly with various ensembles in Quebec — Orchestre Métropolitain, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Sixtrum — and internationally — Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra Terres de Marca. He is also a member of l'Ensemble Paramirabo, the Duo AIRS, the percussions ensemble SCRAP and of the metal ensemble Archɇtype. David holds a master’s at the University of Montreal and a diploma from the Catalonia College of Music in Barcelona.

Festival Accès Asie, in collaboration with OBORO, and as part of the Interval residency, is pleased to present Orchestre sauvage de sons inédits et manipulés avec soin, a performative installation by the artist Chittakone Thirakul (Hazy Montagne Mystique).
Orchestre sauvage de sons inédits et manipulés avec soin is a performance that combines man and machine or autonomous and legitimately orchestrated in the way of an automaton spectacle. This visual and auditory experience is intended to be an infinite loop of perplex sounds that intertwine to create a resounding torments, the nursery rhyme of a dreaming child.
The artist presents an automat orchestra of transformed keyboards, toys and modified childish thingies supported by organic sounds with an amplification deformed by the artist. The idea is to mold each element as if they were the musicians of an orchestra, thereby giving meaning to already created sounds but altered by man.
Chittakone developed his auditory universe from organic sounds, analog sounds all the while paying tribute to his Laotian and Asian origins in his search for sounds.
Chittakone Thirakul (Hazy Montagne Mystique) is an experimental sound artist whose Laotian/Tai Dam origins strongly influence his work. Active in the experimental music scene, his musical pedigree was, early on, self-taught. He is constantly searching for new sounds and dynamic communication with his collaborators. In his quest for identity, existing somewhere between Laos and Quebec, Hazy Montagne Mystique presents an experimental symphony inspired by his South Asian culture and his experimental practice. Feeling somewhat restricted in the early mainstream scene he encountered, Chittakone co-founded the sound label Jeunesse Cosmique in 2010 to honor a wide range of experimental music, including pastoral freak, organic, field recordings, noise, jazz, electronic, and ethnographic. Chittakone collaborates closely with Guillaume Vallée, Kim-Sanh Châu, Yannick Chayer, Jonathan Lachance, and Me Float.

Festival Accès Asie, in collaboration with the Kabir Center, is honored to present Strings of Romance, a musical performance that brings together the internationally renowned sitarist Shujaat Khan, accompanied by tabla players Indranil Mallick and Osbert Lyall.
Once again, this year, our ears can feast on Indian music with the remarkable Shujaat Khan, one of the greatest North Indian classical musicians of our time. Khan is most known for his gayaki and style of sitar playing, a method that aims to match the subtleties of the human voice. With a musical pedigree that goes back seven generations, Khan’s adept sitar playing blends with finely-crafted “sliding melodies of his vocalized style… into an irresistible expression of creative musical passion” (Los Angeles Times).
A child prodigy by the age of six, Khan is considered “one of the world’s best sitarists” (Village Voice), having mastered Hindustani and classical Indian music and pushing the boundaries of tradition. Shujaat Khan has recorded over 60 albums and garnered a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional World Music Album for his work with the Indo-Persian band Ghazal.
Shujaat Husain Khan's musical career began at the age of three. By the age of six, he was recognized as a child prodigy and began giving public performances. A true ambassador of classical Indian music, he pushes the barriers of tradition by collaborating with different musical genres to create his own repertoire. On top of appearingin all the most prestigious Indian music festivals in India, Shujaat Khan performsaround the world. In January 2000, the Boston Heraldlisted Khan's concert, with luminaries includingSeiji Ozawa and Luciano Pavarotti, as one of the top 25 upcoming cultural events ofthe year. Indranil Mallick, a promising tabla player of rare skill, has established himself both as a soloist and accompanist. Indranil holds a bachelor’s degree in Music, focused on tabla, from the University of Chandigarh and a master’s degree in Economics from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. Indranil belongs to the Luckhnow Gharana style of tabla. Among his numerous awards and distinctions in tabla performance,Indranil stood first in the annual Yuva Utsav competition held by the Government of West Bengal and earned "Best Talent of the Year" in the prestigious Dover Lane Music Competition for 1996-97. Indranil is considered an artist of great talent by All IndiaRadio in Kolkata where he is featured regularly on programs aired throughout India. In Montreal, he recently and superbly accompanied the great maestro Ronu Manjumdar at Bourgie Hall.
Interested in percussion from a young age, Osbert started learning Tabla at the age of eight. Ever striving to take his art to the next level, Osbert earned a bachelors degree and a master’s degree in Performing Arts specializing in tabla from Bhatkhande Music Institute Deemed University. He has received many gold medals from the Honorable Governor of UP State and a certificate of merit by maestros Padma Bhushan Pt. Jasraj and Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia. Osbert has received numerous other awards and prizes at both state and national levels. In 2015, Osbert came to Canada to study music business and has since performed in many venues, performing both solos and accompanying many artists at various festivals and concerts throughout India and Canada.

Returning to tantalize our taste buds, Festival Accès Asie will once again host its feature culinary component. This year, Zabi Enâyat-Zâda, author and speaker, presents Afghan cuisine, its history and many influences. A tasting will follow the conference, which will take place on Sunday, May 13th at 2pm at the restaurant Fenêtre sur Kaboul.
Situated in the heart of Asia, Afghanistan intersects the silk roads. Torn by war for the past forty years, this country is above all an ancient land that has been at the crossroads of rich and diverse cultural exchanges for millennia.
As it shared and traded along these ancestral roads, Afghanistan has encountered many who have influenced its evolution – among the most famous are the invaders, Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan. Even its culinary practices have been influenced by these encounters.
An abundance of spices, rice, and culinary traditions have made their way to Afghanistan from nations such as India, China, and what constitutes today’s Uzbekistan, as well as other neighboring countries.

Zabi Enâyat-Zâda was born in Kabul, Afghanistan and left his native country at seventeen to fleethe war between the Russians and the Mujahedeen. Zabi arrived in Quebec as a refugee wherehe learned French. He then beganhis university studies in Montreal. The privilege of being bothAfghan and Quebecoishas allowed Enâyat-Zâda to see the world through two points of view,opposing at times but harmonizing over the years. The richness of the Afghan culture of the1960s and1970s along with the open-mindedness of Montreal forged a new reality for him. Thestory of Enâyat-Zâda’s journey is told in the book, Afghan et musulman, le Québec m’a conquis.
