This year’s Festival will pay special tribute to the late composer Toru Takemitsu at Jeunesses Musicales du Canada on Friday, May 6th.
Specialists in Japanese music, Canadian guitarist Jérôme Ducharme and Japanese born flautist Yuki Isami, will commemorate the 20th anniversary of Takemitsu’s passing with a recital dedicated to his works. From 1974 until his final days, Takemitsu wrote many compositions for guitar, an instrument he was very passionate about.
As an epilogue for the original 60-minute program, Jérôme Ducharme has included a chamber music piece, as well as three flute solo pieces. Toward the Sea, a guitar and flute duet, will add the final touch to this splendid recital.
Programme (subject to change):
A Piece for Guitar (1991)
Folios I, II, III (1974)
All in Twilight I, II, III, IV (1988
In the Woods I, II, III (1995)
Toward the Sea I, II, III (1981)
Of Japanese origin, Yuki Isami (www.yukiisami.com) discovered the world of music at the age of four through formal piano lessons. Her career as a flutist has taken her to numerous festivals in Japan, Canada, Argentina, USA and Europe. An accomplished chamber musician, orchestra player and sought-after soloist, Isami is also a member of several orchestras, Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal, Orchestre symphonique de Laval, and Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. She is currently working on other projects, notably the Yuki Isami Ensemble, a Japanese music group, as well as Allogène, a chamber music ensemble.
Jérôme Ducharme (www.jeromeducharme.ca) holds the honor of being the first Canadian guitarist to win first prize in the prestigious International Cooncert Artist Competition (2005) from the Guitar Foundation of America. While a member of Trio Tangere, he has also pursued a solo career performing throughout North America. He earned a Doctorate in Interpretation at the Université de Montréal, and currently teaches at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, and at Collège Marianopolis. His album, launched by the NAXOS label group, was chosen as “Disc of the Month” by Scène musicale magazine, and has been widely acclaimed by critics.
