Despite the cancellation of the physical edition of Festival Accès Asie due to Covid-19, the festival team worked hard to offer an alternative edition. With the artists programmed and available, you will find below the content offered in this particular edition.

OPENING COCKTAIL April, Thursday 30 - 5:30 PM by Zoom platform We invite you to celebrate our 25th anniversary in the comfort of your house. The evening will be hosted by Himmat Shinhat and Sue Wang. For approximately 1 hour, you will attend the artistic performances of Marina Salonga, Geneviève PM Roy, Laurence Ly and Azalia Kaviani, Misheel Ganbold, Jasmine Xu, Aditya Verma and Chittakone Baccam. They will share their work via audio and / or video track. On the menu: dance, music, circus and video... all of this within a two meters distance! Find out more about the evening initially planned
KICKSTART May, Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd - 5PM on Facebook/Youtube The KickStart Festival of CanAsian Dance, in collaboration with Tangente, is a contest that aims to inspire Canadian choreographers to design and present a short work that illustrates a new direction or a constructive change in their approach to choreography. Choreographers from the KickStart 2020 Festival's initial program are from Ontario and Quebec: Andrea Nann, Winnie Ho, Charo Foo Tai Wei and Deepti Gupta Find out more about the program initially planned
CYCLES OF LIGHT May, Saturday 2 - 5PM on Facebook/Youtube The universe is expressed in cycles: the movements of the planets, the rotation of the earth, the comings and goings of the seasons, the cycles of darkness and light, life and death, the end and the beginnings. For the 25th anniversary of the Festival Accès Asie, we are closing the circle: we are completing a cycle by inviting artists from the very first festival (1995). This alternative edition is bringing together video extract of performances from Atif Siddiqi, Himmat Singh Shinhat and Janet Lumb. Find out more about the program initially planned
SANS PAROLES May, Saturday 9 - 5PM on Facebook/Youtube The Sans Paroles duo stages a duel between two universes articulated by two types of languages, in search of a rare space of expression. Vehicles of matter to think, to feel, the music embodied by the saxophonist and the movement embodied by dance tell us of the difficulty of living together in a limited space, like the urban environment where the private sphere is fast overgrown and where places are scarce. This duo illustrates the pitfalls of cohabitation where each movement too many can lead to estrangement. Sometimes somnambulist, sometimes feline, suspending, surprising and floating Laos promises to win its duel against gravity and to gain scenic space. Choreographer and performer David Laos Phiphak. NATSUKI HIRATSUKA & PARK SOUNDS May, Sunday 10 - 5PM on Facebook/Youtube Natsuki Hiratsuka, pianist will take advantage of the circumstances to share with us 2 pieces. She will play a duet with her mother, who lives in Boston. She will also share a short moment of the concert with her husband given in September 2019. The Montrel duo Park Sounds will present the piece Tagh to Crucifixion by Tigran Mansurian. Essentially an arrangement of a traditional Armenian sacred song, this work is a sincere encounter between contemporary art and popular tradition. Written for the Armenian-American violinist Kim Kashkashian and the percussionist Robyn Schulkowsky, it is the first in the Mansurian collection of pieces for viola and percussion, entitled Lied und Gebilde, whose style varies from traditional transcriptions to contemporary compositions. BÂTARDES May, Thursday 14 - 5PM on Facebook/Youtube Bâtardes is the first creation of the Théâtre Everest company co-founded by the Barshee sisters. Born of a Tibetan father and a Quebec mother, Chloé and Jade Barshee compose a touching theatrical work of self-fiction, in search of their own identity. The two sisters with asian look and Quebecois talk tell the plight of people of mixed origins while trying to answer the last question: Where are you from? A quest for identity that finds its meaning in memories of childhood and the family. Find out more about the show

VISAGES DU CAP BRETON May, Sunday 17 - 5PM on Facebook/Youtube Visages du Cap Breton is a photo exhibition by Ben Fry and Kyra Shaughnessy which explores questions of cultural identity as well as the role of art in creating links between peoples through a series of portraits and discussions with individuals of diverse heritage. DR.L.SUBRAMANIAM May, Saturday 23 - 5PM on Facebook/Youtube Dr L. Subramaniam, this accomplished virtuoso violinist and revolutionary musician will take you on a journey through the history of this music and its different forms, between improvisation and poetic homage through an exceptional video where he will be joined by the percussionist Palghat Sajiv, mridangam player. CLOSING SHOW May, Sunday 31 - 5PM on Facebook/Youtube To close this virtual festival, we will share with you a video of the dancers of the company PAMANA Ng LuzViMinda who will perform extracts from their repertoire of folk dances from the Philippines, dressed in authentic traditional costumes. The Giri Kedaton ensemble will offer us the exclusive diffusion of one of their concert celebrating the 25th anniversary, Music and dance of North Bali presented on December 19, 2019 at the Salle Claude-Champagne, under the shared direction of I Dewa Made Suparta, I Putu Arya Deva Suryanegara and Pierre Paré -Blais. The 2019 edition of the oldest festival celebrating Asian Heritage Month in Canada will be offering no less that 19 events and 75 artists. A rich program that will showcase the talent of nearly forty Asian Canadian artists. We are proud to present four weeks of gatherings and cultural exchange to celebrate Asian culture!

KALYUG: A QUEER CABARET IN THE AGE OF DARKNESS Friday, May 3rd - 9 pm $10 Sala Rossa 4848 St-Laurent Blvd In the Hindu and Indian subcontinent philosophies, Kalyug (Kali Yuga) is the fourth and last cycle of the world, before Kali self-destructs in order to rejuvenate. Kalyug: A Queer Cabaret in the Age of Darkness is curated and hosted by Kama La Mackerel featuring The Balcony, Seckin Sinar, Naya Salamé, Jess Tran, Shin Ling, Yassi Vile, and Laila Gulabi, a host of artists who are LGBTQ+ immigrants and/or refugees working in poetry, storytelling, spoken word, music and dance. Meaning «flower garden» in Persian, Golestan will once again bring Asian cultures together in concert, this time with cellist Jake Charkey, percussionist Ziya Tabassian, and dancer Veronica Simas de Souza. KLEX À MTL Friday, May 10th - 8 pm $10 La lumière collective 7080 Alexandra Street #506 This year, KLEX à MTL will open Festival Accès Asie’s Perles d’ici series, its international exchange component with KLEX Festival (Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film, Video and Music), possibly the only long-running Malaysian festival dedicated to experimental cinema, video, and improvised music. Works by Wuttin Chansataboot (Thailand), Toh Hun Ping (Singapore), Safwan Salleh (Malaysia), Low Pey Sien (Malaysia), Pauline Despi (Philippines), and Chloe Yap Mun Ee (Malaysia) will be presented and works were selected by Siew-Wai Kok, Malaysian videographer and musician, co-founder and co-director of KLEX festival. HANDSHACK Saturday, May 11th - 1 pm Free admission OBORO 4001 Berri Street To celebrate their 20 years of collaboration, Festival Accès Asie and OBORO are proud to present Handshack an interactive installation by the multidisciplinary artist Marites Carino. Completed as part of the short-term residency Interval at OBORO’s New Media Lab, Handshack questions how our overuse of electronics reduces daily opportunity for human contact and diminishes our ability to be present when face-to-face. While, the dancers of the Indonesian music and dance ensemble Giri Kedaton present their repertoire of Balinese dances, ethnomusicologist Frédéric Léotar will unveil musical traditions, still alive and quite diverse, from the nomadic spaces of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Qaraqalpaqstan. This special evening of music, dance and film will no doubt bring forth the spirits and allow us to tap into our spiritual connection. May: officially Asian Heritage Month since 2001
As part of the 18th edition of the Festival, whose main objective is the promotion and dissemination of Asian cultural heritage in Montreal and more broadly in Canada, a new theme is launched from May 2 to 19: "The Gesture of Sharing".
Come and find out what the Asian community has to offer in the arts! No less than thirty local and national artists of Asian origins will be featured in seven different Montreal venues, in multidisciplinary fields such as dance, music, theater, new media, films and even culinary arts ...

Director's Message
This new edition of multidisciplinary art performances will be held from May 6 to 29 and will take place in seven different locations. With the theme « MUSES AMUSE », the festival will feature 25 artists from Iran, Tibet, India, Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam, Canada and of course, Quebec. The theme is a nod to the muses that bring inspiration and reflection to the artists, allowing us to celebrate diversity in the expression of the arts. (see more)

5th edition of Festival Accès Asie in Chinese Garden
The Montreal Asian Heritage Festival under its new name Festival Accès Asie will be presenting from the 16th to 27th of July Asian dance and music in collaboration with the Chinese Garden of the Montreal Botanical Garden. This event is a blend of traditional, classical and community based dance and music of Asian origin. The shows are happening outdoor at the Chinese Garden during the afternoon.
