Description

To kick off the evening together, join us for a waacking workshop led by dancer Simran. This workshop is open to all, free of charge and for all levels, to discover this expressive and powerful style.

In the second part of the evening, Drama, Komodo, La Nuit, Simziez, Tales and To Channel  will join forces for an exceptional waacking exhibition battle. Each will bring their unique touch to the stage, combining technique, style, and personality.

Doni-B will host the 30th-anniversary event, channeling the energy of waacking to celebrate the end of this month-long festival of Asian heritage. 

DJ Fly Lady Di will set the mood with her energetic mixes, immersing the crowd in a festive disco atmosphere.

Come and enjoy the experience, and share a moment of festivity and discovery, while celebrating Asian Heritage Month in all its diversity. An event not to be missed to close this 30th edition of Festival Accès Asie in style.

Biographies

Doni-B

Doni-B works in the interdisciplinary arts, particularly performance art. Known for their activism, outspokenness, and radical vulnerability, they focus their research on themes both taboo and potentially revolutionary.

They perform interpretive dance, punking, cabaret, butoh, acrobatics, and contemporary dance. 

Their creations include SOS Belle Femme (2020), Sous le Voile de la Bienséance (2021), Rage et Amour (2023), and Songe d’un jour d’hiver (2024), recently performed at the Festival Entractes in Montreal.

Drama

Drama comes to us by way of Montreal, with over 15 years of experience in the dance scene. He has trained, taught, judged and battled in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, New York, L.A. and Tokyo. His fluid, complex and powerful waacking style has won him accolades, and top places in battles like Hot Mess, Crystallized, InfinityWaack, The Chosen, District Groove, The Waackdown, Bust A Move and Heir To the Throne. His love and dedication to W*acking are what drive him to always strive for excellence both in his own dance and his teachings.

Fly Lady Di

Fly Lady Di (Diana Reyes) is a Toronto-born renaissance woman known for her work as a painter, dancer, content creator and DJ active for twenty years. She’s spun for Dior, Tiffany & Co., Twitter, Bastid’s BBQ, Jay-Z’s D’Usse Cognac, Rihanna’s Fenty, Toronto Maple Leafs, Just For Laughs and eBay to name a few. She credits most of her musical tastes to her dancing days in New York City’s early 2000s where she rocked the industry and the underground House clubs. Di is an open format DJ but claims golden era Hip-Hop and R&B as her specialty as well as Soulful House and Classic Dancehall.

Komodo

Komodo (they/he) is an artist and community organizer of Chinese-Bruneian descent based in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. Their mission is to contribute to the global renaissance of queer asian culture through erotic expression and inter-generational drag. Through their art, they hope to allow future queer asian generations to heal through sexual liberation and having healthier connections with their cultural roots.  He has performed with Sticky Rice Magazine, Festival Accès Asie, Tangente Danse, CanAsian Dance and Montreal Chinatown’s Night Market. 

Komodo is also the founder of OSLA, short for “Où Sont Les Asiatiques”, a community potluck for queer asians in Montreal to find each other and connect over sharing food.

La Nuit

La Nuit is a whacking dancer. Co-founder of the Supernature collective, he regularly organizes soirées that combine whacking and clubbing with Flame and Moodz. Also a DJ and singer, he often performs at these events. After a series of incredibly successful events, his Supernature collective signed up for one of its biggest dates last summer with a sold-out edition at Club Soda.

Simziez

Simziez – allias Simran Sachar is a South Asian contemporary and street dance artist, choreographer, and actor. She is a captivating anomaly in this industry who consistently works in ground-breaking spaces.

Her work uncovers distorted memories and how they disfigure us, the duality of relief and grief, and our own identity as the mirror.

Simran’s latest live work, ‘ACT TWENTY FIVE’ premiered in front of two sold out audiences in June 2024 at Vancouver’s Dancing On The Edge Festival. Simran’s latest film “The Edge of The Underworld” with XR technology, premiered in November 2024. Her first XR film, BETA बेटा  was presented at Luna Arts Festival 2021. In 2020, her first film ‘LUNACY’ was a part of National Arts Centre’s CAPSULE and premiered at F.O.R.M Film Festival and won the Official Selection of the Audience Choice Award. She made her acting debut in 2023 as the lead actor and assistant choreographer in Alberta Theatre Projects showing of Bombay Black as Apsara. Simran is the Winner of 2023’s Release Yourself Whacking Battle in Montreal.

Simran’s other credits include Netflix, CW Riverdale, The Vancouver Opera, Dairy Canada, The Vancouver Art Gallery, Dancing On The Edge, OFF-Parcours Danse, OFF-FTA, F.O.R.M Festival, Apple TV, National Arts Centre, Fringe Manila and more.

Tales

Taylor Yeung, or by her stage name Tales (she/her) is a movement artist who has been dancing, teaching, and performing in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal since 2014. Deeply inspired by the music, culture, and values of the disco movement, she specializes in two dynamic dance styles: Hustle and W(x)acking.

Taylor’s recent performances include Manger Nos Racines by Léa Tremblay Fong and Conjuguer Crise et Empathie by Krystina Dejean. As one half of the duo Julien & Taylor, she is at the forefront of the global resurgence of Hustle, teaching and competing both locally and internationally. Since 2021, she and Julien have been actively nurturing Montreal’s Hustle community through teaching, event organization, and community-building initiatives.

In addition to her dance career, Taylor holds a B.Sc. in Kinesiology and works part-time as a massage therapist. Her expertise in these fields enriches her understanding of the mind-body connection, which she explores through movement.

To Channel

Originally from Lebanon, Chanel began her career as a performer and choreographer in many artistic projects in Tio’tia:ke (Montreal). She holds a diploma in contemporary dance from Collège Montmorency, a UNESCO-recognized CID in BIGBANG training, and a diploma from the École de danse contemporaine de Montréal.

From 2017 to 2018, she quickly integrated into the Ekspresyon company, a Haitian folk dance troupe. Since 2019, Chanel has performed with Veils of Bollywood, founded by Rameez Karim. She dances in several of Karim’s pieces, including Dabav, Jardins des possibilités, Bindi, and Solaris. In 2020, she also joined the collective Les Porteuses d’Eau by choreographer Jade Gabriele. With the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, she began researching and creating for the piece “AGUA,” as a performer. In 2023, she performed in Flesh and Dust by Claire Pearl, and Entre-Deux by Claudia Chan Tak.

Since 2022, she has been sharing excerpts from her multidisciplinary project El kamar bi zaher, which she choreographs and performs. In 2022, she presented PLAYGROUND at Tangente, a co-creation with Maude Laurin-Beaulieu. She initiated the Wholeness Mouvement in 2020, a project that promotes exchange between the Montreal community and a return to nature. In 2024, Chanel researched and created a project called Hubuub, which explores Lebanese folklore, and the video-dance research project called Wholeness // Trêve, inspired by the tales of One Thousand and One Nights. Chanel’s diverse experiences inspire her to convey a story with her body and to share the common meaning found in live art.
