Giri Kedaton

Giri Kedaton, which means “Royal Mountain” in Balinese, got its start in part thanks to the Indonesian government’s donation of two Balinese gamelan instruments to Canada following the 1986 World Fair in Vancouver. The University of Montreal’s Faculty of Music now houses the instruments and is also home to Giri Kedaton. In 1995, Giri Kedaton grew out of a series of independent and very unique gamelan workshops featuring great masters of Balinese music. It became a victim of its own success and today comprises twenty-five musicians and three dancers. The ensemble has performed in numerous festivals such as Les Francofolies 2016, Festival Classica, Traditions du Monde in Sherbrooke and Festival Orientalys . In 2007, Giri Kedaton unveiled its production Project Bali X merging Balinese music with other styles such as metal, techno, pop, and rock. Giri Kedaton’s mandate is to showcase Balinese music and culture to foster links between the Bali music community and broader musical communities in Montreal as well as throughout Quebec and Canada.
