Wind of Asia

In partnership with Quartier des spectacles, Festival Accès Asie is pleased to invite the public to a brand new edition of its outdoor event, Wind of Asia at Les Jardins Gamelin. Three days of music and dance await everyone at Les Jardins Gamelin in the heart of downtown Montreal.

Description

On Friday, May 20th from 12:00 to 1:00 pm, musician Huu Bac Quach will perform with pianist Guillaume Martineau and double bassist Jean-Félix Mailloux. Their compositions will showcase a fusion of Vietnamese, Chinese and North American jazz music. Sitarist Uwe Neumann and tabla player Bertil Schulrabe will take us on a journey to the Indian coast with sounds of the sitar and the tabla. 

On Saturday, May 21st from 12:00 to 3:00 pm, contemporary dancer Julio Hong and dance troupe PAMANA ng LuzViMinda will present a series of performances and public workshops to offer us all a glimpse into the rich cultural landscape of their respective heritages. 

On Sunday, May 22nd 2016, 12:00 to 3:00 pm, the dance troupes Simork (Iran) and Komachi Montreal (Japan) will each delight the public by performing a number followed by a workshop open to all folkloric dance enthusiasts.

Biographies

Huu Bac Quach

Composer-performer, born in Vietnam, Huu Bac delivers present-day jazz music by blending Eastern and Western sounds. Inspired by his numerous travels through Asia, Europe and America. He has created an exciting repertoire of cultural fusion, playing his favorite instruments, the Vietnamese monochord (Dan Bau), the Chinese fiddle (Erhu) and the Andean flute (Quena). For this special event, Huu Bac Quach performs with two members of his Quintet, Guillaume Martineau, on piano, and Jean-Félix Mailloux, on double bass.

Uwe Neumann

A resident in Canada since 2000, Uwe specialises in Indian classical music. He studied the sitar for ten years under the guidance of master Pandit Indranil Bhattacharya. In Germany from 1974 to 1986, he studied classical and jazz-rock guitar. In addi on to participating in various Canadian festivals, he has given more than 200 concerts with Ragleela, a world music group he founded in 1990 to display the rich melodic heritage of India along with Western modal music.

Bertil Schulrabe

Bertil Schulrabe is a versatile drummer and percussionist, with extensive experience in several musical styles including pop, funk, jazz, rock, and folk. He has performed with famous stars such as I Musici, Jean-Pierre Zanella, Sylvain Cossette, Said Mesnaoui, Céline Dion, Nanette Workman, Lokua Kanza. Bertil Schulrabe is an artist constantly in search of creative opportunities.

PAMANA ng LuzViMinda

Founded in Quebec in 2005, Filipino folk vocal and dance company PAMANA ng LuzViMinda has no less than 40 dancers and performers. As a multi-generational troup, their mission is to represent and share the diversity of the Philippines within the Quebecois and Canadian cultural mosaic. Through their vibrant choreographies, an outstanding collection of traditional costumes, and special attention to detail in each theatrical production, PAMANA ng LuzViMinda aspires to honor their cultural origins and share this rich heritage with their audiences.

Julio Hong

Born in Havana, of Chinese origin, Julio Hong is a master of Latin American style, and Cuban popular and folkloric dance. After moving to Montreal and working with Marie Chouinard, Rubberband Dance Group and Cirque du Soleil, Julio founded the Afro Cuban Association of Montreal and Le groupe herencias. He teaches and creates his own choreographies which fuse contemporary movement with ballet and folkloric dance. His work constantly pushes the limits of identity and shows us how to exist within our cultural framework without losing our roots. Julio’s workshop, with live musicians, is guaranteed to get you up and moving.

Simork

Founded in Montreal in 2015, Simork dance troupe was established by Nimâ Machouf, who also serves as choreographer. Simork promises to take us on a journey to Iran, the birthplace of Nimâ Machouf. In every Iranian region, local customs and traditional costumes vary, as well as their gastronomy, language, music and landscape. Through classical, folkloric dance and Bandari (a dance style from southern Iran), Simork portrays the traditional and modern cultural heritage of Iran.

Komachi Montréal

Dance troupe Komachi Montreal performs in Japan’s Minyo dance style. This dance troupe was founded in 2007 by Kayo Yasuhara, also in charge of the artistic direction. Fascinated by the different expressions of Japanese arts, Kayo studied theatre in Tokyo. Japanese provinces serve as their main inspiration as they showcase scenes of day-today life in their stage work.
